Jorgelina Abbate
2003-2004 Faculty-in-Residence
Jorgelina Abbate, PhD served the Department of Residential Life as the 2003-2004 Faculty-in-Residence. She received her Ph.D. from Boston College's Lynch School of Education in the area of Curriculum and Instruction/ Teacher Education. She holds two Master's degrees, one in Elementary Education and the other in Social Studies Education at the secondary level. A native of Argentina, Jorgelina completed her undergraduate studies in International Affairs at the Universidad Nacional de Rosario.
As a former urban teacher in K-12 in both monolingual and bilingual settings, Jorgelina's research interests included school reform, teacher communities, parental involvement, multicultural and bilingual education, teacher research, action research, and service learning. As a consequence of her many years working with urban ethnically diverse and economically disadvantaged families, Jorgelina believed that power relations between teachers and learners must be minimized for true learning to occur.
Dr. Abbate was an Assistant Professor in Secondary Social Studies at the Neag School of Education in the Gentry Building. In her leisure time, Jorgelina maintained an active lifestyle that included the practice of yoga, roller-blading, and indulging in her karaoke hobby. Jorgelina frequently used her karaoke machine in social programming with Northwest residents.
